Source and disclaimers

The information for this post was gathered from the Sanctum of Domination Statistics Page on Warcraft Logs for the weeks of August 24th and August 31st for the Shadowlands Patch 9.1 division for Mythic difficulty. This time, we’ll look at statistics from the 95th percentile as well as the overall findings to get a more complete view.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the current state of class balance for Sanctum of Domination in Shadowlands Season 2, based on statistics from the most recent raid week.

We mention viewpoint because there are inherent biases in this method of looking at data.

  • Specs that are deemed underpowered are played less often and seem to be weaker than they are.
  • This occurs because many performance-oriented players will choose the strongest spec or class, widening the gap between top and bottom specifications even further.
  • Alternative methods like parsing funneling may distort the position of specifications for the 95th percentile. To help create a clearer picture for all specifications, we’ve included a graphic that shows the results for all percentiles.

Weeks of August 24th and August 31st Spec Analysis

We’ve asked our Warlock of Demonology and Monk Windwalker authors to help contextualize their spec’s place in statistics for this week’s Sanctum of Domination.

Demonology Warlock

  My in-game name is Not, and I’m well-known in these corners of the internet. I’ve been a Warlock since the beginning of Cataclysm and haven’t really changed my mind. Over time, I got more engaged in theorycrafting, to the point that I created and managed Lock One Stop Shop, a resource devoted to all Warlocks.

Despite the raid being cleared by all specs of all shapes and sizes, Demonology remains at or around the top of the rankings. The majority of the reasons for this are still valid even before the raid’s debut; Demonology’s one-minute damage cycle fits in very well on almost all encounters, particularly because there have been a lot of instances when halting DPS and bursting is important.

With boss kills becoming shorter and each cooldown cycle having a greater impact, we can still benefit from Wilfred’s Sigil of Superior Summoning, which reduces the cooldown of Summon Demonic Tyrant and pairs exceptionally well with Power Infusion and Soulletting Ruby, especially now that it has an increased item level.

Because of the devastating cooldown cycle accessible to you almost on demand, Demonology is the preferred Warlock spec to play on all but two bosses in the Sanctum of Domination (Soulrender Dormazain and Kel’thuzad). Most organizations continue to boost us with Power Infusion in order to buff Summon Demonic Tyrant as much as possible. When Power Infusion is combined with Soulletting Ruby’s on-use effect, the Demonic Tyrant may dole out a lot of crits in a short amount of time.

The condition for Demonology to be so effective in terms of damage is, of course, Power Infusion. If you don’t receive this boost for your raid, you’ll notice a large decrease in total damage, making Demonology a less attractive spec to play, but it’s still a viable option. Without Power Infusion, your damage changes from being out of this world to being in the center of the pack. When this happens, Demonology becomes basically the same as Destruction or Affliction without the external benefits.

Windwalker primary since early Mists of Pandaria, guide writer/theorycrafter/teacher for many years on US-Turalyon; Guild Master and Midweek Raider in Occasional Excellence on US-Turalyon;

Windwalkers continue to dominate WarcraftLogs’ total meters. Anyone who understands how many of the battles are constructed, and how powerful Windwalker is in certain bouts, should not be surprised. The primary culprit is Soulrender Dormazain, where Windwalkers lead by more than a third of a percent over Affliction Warlocks in second position and more than a quarter of a percent over Elemental Shaman in third place. Windwalkers are ranked #1, although only slightly higher than Retribution Paladins at #2, according to Painsmith Raznal’s analysis. Windwalkers are also at the top of the rankings according to Fatescribe and Kel’Thuzad.

This, however, contrasts with how Windwalker fares against other bosses, and paints a very different image of Windwalker’s skills. Windwalkers are undoubtedly one of the kings of AOE, but this does not negate the fact that they have a single target vulnerability. Windwalkers are in the bottom five of all specs on every other boss save Eye of the Jailer. There are numerous aspects to this, from Windwalkers concentrating more on AOE setups or maximizing any AOE on certain bosses, to the majority of players choosing Necrolord, who is better for AOE, over Kyrian, who is marginally stronger in single target. Although there are valid reasons for this issue to be overstated, Windwalker remains one of the worst specs in single target scenarios.

Fortunately, Windwalker can rely even more heavily on our AOE strength, and many battles in Sanctum of Domination are well-designed to take use of this. Windwalkers are also crazy in Mythic+ right now, with strong procs allowing them to wipe whole packs in a matter of seconds. This is nearly completely because to the Dance of Chi-Ji talent and Calculated Strikes conduit, which take Windwalker’s average AOE and make it extraordinary, then give him a chance to quadruple it for free. Mawsworn on Soulrender, Shadowsteel Horrors on Painsmith, all the adds on Kel’Thuzad, and Sylvanas’ arrows and P2 adds are all easily dispatched by a Windwalker with Dance of Chi-Ji. Windwalkers aren’t much assistance when it comes to real boss damage, but we can cover the AOE effectively enough for others to take up the slack.

Windwalkers shouldn’t be shocked to see our AOE damage reduced in 9.1.5, but ideally this will be accompanied by an increase in single target damage, allowing us to be less one-dimensional.
