Diablo II: Resurrected Developer Update on Console Lobbies, TCP/IP, & UW Updates

Last updated November 2, 2021 | Follow us on Pinterest

Blizzard’s Diablo II is getting a new update on consoles, and the developer has some exciting news for PC players as well. The game will be getting TCP/IP support, which will allow players to play on their home network with friends or strangers.

The diablo 2: resurrected ui is a developer update on the console lobbies, TCP/IP, and UW updates for Diablo II.

Hi all,

When it comes to game creation, there are some realities that development teams must face when faced with problems that affect the gaming experience. Two of our guiding concepts for this remaster are to preserve the authenticity of the original Diablo II experience while also making it more accessible in today’s world. Our aim is to both commemorate and introduce a new generation of musicians to this timeless classic. With that in mind, as we get closer to the release of Diablo II: Resurrected, we’d like to take this opportunity to provide some new information on a few in-game elements that we reviewed after the Technical Alpha and Beta events.

Update on Console Lobbies and Chat

We discovered and addressed a problem that prevented console players from forming groups in multiplayer during the Early Access Beta. As we proceeded in our testing, we found that this approach was functioning as planned for the Open Beta; and when we updated the Diablo II experience for the console, we made sure that players didn’t have to depend on lobbies to play with others. Instead, gamers may directly ask their friends to join their game or use the Party Finder to find other players with similar goals. With that stated, we’ve seen a lot of debate and concern over the last few weeks about how difficult it is to join the right games depending on a player’s current activity. Finding other console players in Beta was limited to a select circumstances. You may, for example, join another player’s multiplayer session if they were on the same quest as you, with a comparable character level and difficulty.

Console lobbies do not spread unless you meet a few minimal criteria in modes like PvP or the Cow Level. Players must achieve level 9 to participate in PvP. Players must first accomplish the task on their own front before moving on to the Cow Level. Once those criteria are fulfilled for these two modes, console lobbies for those activities will become visible for those participants. If no mission is chosen, players may choose to go on a free roaming adventure. There are no task restrictions, however people with comparable levels and difficulty will be allowed to play together in a multiplayer session. Once a player’s character completes the first mission that a lobby began with in that multiplayer session, it is immediately changed to Free Roam.

Many console gamers have requested additional choices to better navigate activities in multiplayer as a result of our Beta. Along with the Pandemonium event, Uber Diablo event, and PvP/Dueling, we’ve introduced Bosses and Zones tabs to the Party Finder so players may better cooperate on that front. Some console users have also asked for the ability to establish their own lobbies. That is not a feature we will enable at launch, but we will continue to monitor comments on this subject once Diablo II: Resurrected is out.

Beyond the mission choices that were available during the Beta, players will be able to filter by the following new criteria in the Party Finder upon launch:

The Boss Assaults

  • Andariel: Completion of Act 1 is required.
  • Act 2 completion is required for Duriel.
  • Act 3 completion is required for Mephisto.
  • Diablo: Completion of Act 4 is required.
  • Act 5 completion is required for Baal.
  • Depending on whether you’re playing a Classic or Expansion character, you’ll finish Act 4 or 5.

Zones

  • There is no need for free roaming.
  • Tristram: Doesn’t necessitate anything.
  • Act 1 completion is required for the Canyon of the Magi Tombs.
  • Act 2 completion is required for Chaos Sanctuary.
  • Act 4 completion is required for Pindleskin.
  • Act 1 completion is required for Maggot Lair.

Other

  • Act 5 of the Pandemonium Event is now complete.
  • Act 5 of Uber Diablo is now complete.
  • PVP/Dueling: Level 9 is required.

Finally, there has been a lot of debate about the console’s Chat feature. We created the game to offer the greatest experience possible on each device. For consoles, the main means of communication is via native voice chat. So, we’re not making any adjustments there, but we’ll keep an eye on the comments to see if it continues to be a source of worry for our gamers. If that’s the case, we’ll look at changing or expanding the in-game chat system after launch.

Support for TCP/IP

The loss of TCP/IP support was first mentioned in our Beta blog, with the caveat that this feature will not be included in the Beta or the final game. We’d like to use this opportunity to explain why we deleted this functionality. Following the Technical Alpha, we discovered that this feature was causing serious security problems in our game. We recognize that eliminating this functionality is a significant barrier for our community’s skilled multiplayer modders. Still, keeping the game’s environment as safe as possible for all of our players is our first concern.

Despite this modification, modding will continue to be available. Players will be able to edit individual files, such as changing the values of skills, items, and more. Keep in mind that the Diablo II Classic client will continue to exist and will not be removed. Our community will ensure that multiplayer modifications may continue to exist and flourish on that platform.

Changes in Support Across the Board

Following the Beta, we noticed a lot of discussion about whether or not ultrawide monitor support will be changed. During the Technical Alpha, gamers with Ultrawide hardware were able to use their full 21:9 displays. During that test, however, we discovered restrictions that affected those participants as well as others. For example, the AI was unable to detect the player and therefore launch assaults. Furthermore, gamers with 21:9 displays were able to summon a large number of monsters at a range that exceeded the game’s original purpose. Players using 21:9 monitors could strike opponents with the additional screen space in a situation where players (for example, playing a ranged class) were hitting monsters, but the monsters would not pull or respond, but could still be destroyed. Ultimately, the AI is unaffected by the extra distance provided by a 21:9 display. This isn’t intended, particularly if you’re playing with someone who has a 16:9 monitor. Those with Ultrawide displays will be able to have their game screen purview extended to 19:9 (the maximum length of the in-game restriction zones) with a vignette on the sides of the game screen to preserve the integrity of everyone’s experience and encourage a level playing field for everyone. We understand that gamers have invested a significant amount of money in their 21:9 hardware configurations, and that seeing black bars may detract from their enjoyment. As a result, we’ll keep an eye on these debates and look into potential solutions that don’t affect how the game is played.

We appreciate your time and input in helping us make Diablo II: Resurrected a better experience for those who will be playing at launch. Please stay tuned as we set up new dedicated Diablo II: Resurrected forums for the community to continue discussing the game and share their experiences. We’re working hard to have everything ready for the September 23 release date. We can’t wait for everyone to return to the Rogue Encampment and start their eastward journey. Always facing east.

Thank you to the Diablo Community Team.
