Diablo II: Resurrected Lore – The Story So Far

Last updated November 2, 2021 | Follow us on Pinterest

The lore of Diablo II has been resurrected, this time in a new game called Diablo Immortal. This is the story so far.

The diablo 2 story is a blog that has been released by Blizzard Entertainment. This blog shares the history of Diablo II, from its release to the present day.

In Diablo II: Resurrected, the Lord of Terror returns, carrying millennia of cosmic baggage from many worlds, novels, and games with him. We put up a chronology of the tug-of-war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, as well as the tumultuous events caused by this conflict, to help you better comprehend the condition of Sanctuary at the start of your new journey.

Before you begin your adventure in Diablo II: Resurrected, read on to experience the history of Diablo.

The Endless Battle

Light and darkness have been at odds since the beginning of time, waging an unending battle known as the Eternal Conflict, both striving for the ability to rule over all of creation. The angels of the High Heavens, headed by the Angiris Council of Archangels, thought that only ultimate order could rule the realms, while the demonic dwellers of the Burning Hells, led by the Prime Evils, Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto, maintained that darkness and disorder were at the heart of everything.

Despite the length and scope of these groups’ wars, neither was able to maintain dominance over the other for long. Exhausted by the unending battle between the Heavens and Hells, the archangel Inarius set out to establish a world free of the turmoil that had devoured both realms for so long. To do this, he teamed up with the demon Lilith, Daughter of Hatred, and collected renegade angels and demons sympathetic to their cause to form Sanctuary, a mortal realm. Sanctuary was hidden from the prying eyes of Heaven and Hell because to Inarius’ use of the Worldstone, a powerful relic that had long been battled for by both sides.

Sanctuary’s rebellious angels and demons gave birth to humanity’s forefathers: the nephalem. When it was discovered that these creatures’ might could rival that of their forefathers, some feared that their might would attract the attention of the High Heavens and Burning Hells. When Inarius went into seclusion to ponder this discovery, Lilith, fearful for the safety of her offspring, went on a rampage across Sanctuary, slaughtering every angel and demon in the realm. Inarius was compelled to exile her to the Void, where he tampered with the Worldstone to weaken the nephalem’s strength. Each generation became weaker, their lifespans shortening as time passed, until they were reduced to a race of mortals with no knowledge of their forefathers.

The War on Sin

For a while, humanity lived in Sanctuary in peace; but, as with all good things, it was not to last. The rulers of the Burning Hells discovered the secret mortal world, igniting the Great Sin War. Inarius was opposed against the armies of Hell in this battle, with each side trying to gently persuade and influence the humans to their side. Both fought for control of humanity, with the demons attempting to use the mortal residents of Sanctuary as weapons in the Eternal Conflict, and Inarius attempting to maintain control of the ideal world he had created.

The Prime Evils of the Burning Hells established the Temple of the Triune to exert control over mankind. This religion was divided into three branches, each of which was dedicated to the Prime Evils’ alter egos: Mefis, Dialon, and Bala, who were unknown to humans. As the decades passed and the Prime Evils’ power grew unfettered, the Triune gradually and quietly lured mankind to the side of sin. In order to counteract the Triune’s increasing influence, Inarius assumed the role of “Prophet” and established the Cathedral of Light to teach the doctrines of the High Heavens.

In Sanctuary, like in Heaven and Hell, the stalemate between light and evil persisted. Both the Triune and the Cathedral of Light propagated their respective gospels throughout the country and gathered swaths of followers until the reappearance of humanity’s First Mother: Lilith upended their chess game.

The inhibitions placed on the Worldstone by Inarius were reduced by Lilith, enabling the nephalem to reclaim their previous abilities. Uldyssian ul-Diomed, a farmer, was then duped into using his reawakened nephalem powers as a weapon. Uldyssian led his fellow nephalem in a rebellion against the Triune and the Cathedral of Light, using the Worldstone to enhance the nephalem’s otherworldly abilities and attract the High Heavens’ attention to Sanctuary in the process. Inarius sent Lilith to the Void once again, and Uldyssian understood that the uncontrolled nephalem might mean death for all of Sanctuary, a triple battle erupted. He gave his life to once again subdue the Worldstone’s power, robbing his fellow nephalem of their restored powers in the process.

Following Uldyssian’s death, the Angiris Council and Mephisto met to deliberate on Sanctuary’s destiny. Both sides of the Sin War eventually came to an agreement: in exchange for Inarius’ eternal imprisonment in the Burning Hells by Mephisto, Heaven and Hell would refrain from interfering in Sanctuary’s affairs, allowing future generations of humanity to walk the paths of light or dark on their own free will. As a result, humanity’s memories of the Sin War, as well as the demons and angels who previously walked among them, were obliterated, and the whole thing slipped quietly into history.

The Horadrim and the Dark Exile

The four Lesser Evils of the Burning Hells were enraged by Mephisto’s pact with the Angiris Council, and started to challenge the Prime Evils’ power. They thought the three were unworthy to continue fighting the High Heavens, so they started an insurrection that engulfed all of Hell. The Prime Evils were defeated and banished to the mortal world by the Lesser Evils. Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal stormed into Sanctuary, destroying its eastern regions for decades and wreaking havoc. Tyrael, the Archangel of Justice, finally became aware of their existence. Tyrael created the Horadrim, a group of strong magicians dedicated to the annihilation of the demon lords, to fight the Prime Evils. The Horadrim followed the three across Sanctuary, equipped with soulstones created by Tyrael from the Worldstone’s shards that could imprison the Prime Evils.

Two of the three demon lords were captured and imprisoned by the Horadrim inside the Soulstones. Jered Cain and his fellow Horadrim trapped the last of the three Evils, Diablo, and buried his soulstone under Tristram Cathedral after a long chase. The Horadrim gradually faded away as the danger of the Prime Evils faded away and the task assigned to them by Tyrael was completed. The inhabitants of Sanctuary were once again at peace.

Tristram’s Darkening is a story about a young man named Tristram who is

Years later, a well-liked king called Leoric arrived in Tristram and declared it his capital. The soulstone that had been imprisoned under the Cathedral long ago had been tainted by Diablo’s power over time, unbeknownst to Leoric. The Archbishop Lazarus, Leoric’s advisor, was attracted to the soulstone and the energy radiating from it. Diablo enslaved Lazarus and forced him to release Diablo’s weakening spirit. Diablo wanted a mortal body to house his ephemeral spirit in order to reveal himself once again; he attempted to take Leoric first, but was unable to completely control him, leaving the King a maddened and mindless shell of his former self.

Diablo then turned his attention to Prince Albrecht, Leoric’s son. Diablo was able to take possession of the Prince’s body after forcing Lazarus to implant the soulstone in Albrecht’s forehead. After Diablo’s unsuccessful possession drove Leoric insane, he blamed the inhabitants of Tristram of orchestrating his son’s abduction and started murdering those he believed were responsible. Tristram was left without a ruler or successor to lead them through the approaching darkness when Leoric’s knights were compelled to kill their king.

Lazarus took advantage of the confusion and rallied the people of Tristram to save Prince Albrecht by enticing them into the catacombs under the Cathedral. The townspeople banded together, but Lazarus’ falsehoods led to their horrific deaths at the hands of the monster Butcher. Diablo rose in power as a result of these sacrifices, and started calling demons to torment the countryside while he regained strength in preparation for the release of his brothers, Baal and Mephisto, from their respective imprisonment.

An unexpected hero rose from the darkness, one of many attracted to Tristram to put a stop to the demon scourge. He went deep into the Cathedral’s labyrinthine depths, killing demons and discovering Diablo’s evil plan before confronting the Prime Evil himself. The hero defeated Diablo, but he was compelled to re-embed the soulstone in his own forehead to keep the Lord of Terror at bay.

The Return of Evil

Despite defeating Diablo, the hero was overcome by the power of the soulstone. The hero took on the mantle of the Dark Wanderer and started his trek eastward, a shattered man who had been hollowed out into nothing more than a receptacle for Diablo.

As a result of the devastation, the narrative of a new hero emerges: your story. Embark, if you dare, on a trip into Sanctuary’s stifling darkness, where you’ll uncover the Dark Wanderer’s secrets and learn the destinies of the Prime Evils…

On September 23, The Lord of Terror returns. Experience a five-act epic tale, unleash hell as one of seven different classes, and fight your way through hordes of hellish creatures and undead abominations to learn the destiny of the Prime Evils.
