On This Day – Patch 1.8: Dragons of Nightmare Was Released Sixteen Years Ago on October 10, 2005

The first patch of the World of Warcraft was released on October 10, 2005.

The pre patch notes is a post that includes all the changes and additions that were made to the game before it was officially released.

Patch 1.8.0: Dragons of Nightmare was published 16 years ago on October 10, 2005. The Dragons of Nightmare World Boss, improvements to Silithus, Hallow’s End, a major Druid overhaul, and the vendor Buyback tab were all introduced in this release.

New World Boss: Nightmare Dragons

There’s a ruckus at the Great Trees.

In the Emerald Dream, something isn’t quite right. Huge dragons with the Green Dragonflight’s gleaming green scales have been seen protecting the Great Trees’ portals… yet these once-noble animals are crawling with a new, frightening evil, not the serenity for which Ysera is renowned. If you dare to face them, bring a large number of friends with you; their abilities are tremendous, and they will not hesitate to smash anybody who approaches them. — Notes about the Patch: Patch 1.8

The Dragons of Nightmare World Boss was made up of four bosses, each of which was a huge dragon. Ysondre, Lethon, Emeriss, and Taerar, known for dropping Nature Resistance gear, would spawn one at a time through portals in Duskwood, The Hinterlands, Ashenvale, and Feralas a few times each week.

  • These four dragons were eliminated from the game after the Shattering in Cataclysm. Ysondre, the Dragons of Nightmare’s commander, became a Feralas questgiver, offering a task involving their redemption (Ysondre’s Call or Ysondre’s Call).
  • The Dragons of Nightmare were lured back to the corruption in Legion, and one of them became a boss in The Emerald Nightmare.
  • Druids now have access to the portals that the Dragons of Nightmare originated from as part of their Legion Class Hall.
  • As part of the World of Warcraft anniversary celebration in 2020, the Dragons of Nightmare reappeared as World Bosses.

Silithus is getting a makeover.

The Silithid Are Stirring Silithus’s dry sands are changing. Beyond the wall to the south, something is stirring… Assist the Cenarion Circle’s Druids as they explore the desert’s secrets. Investigate the Twilight Hammer’s presence for answers. Explore the colonies of the extraterrestrial beings known as the Silithid to learn more about them. The high-level adventurer is in for a lot of exciting adventures! — Notes about the Patch: Version 1.8 of the patch

The Twilight’s Hammer landed in the zone, and the Cenarion Circle’s druids examined it, giving Silithus a full makeover. This was the first step toward the great event that would open Ahn’Qiraj’s gates.

Hallow’s End is a new holiday.

Halloween is coming to an end. When the decorations for Hallow’s End light up the cities of Azeroth, you know something’s up! Look for unique merchants in Orgrimmar or Ironforge to get your hands on some tasty goodies! Participate in a little trick-or-treating with a sick orphan! Deathcaller Yanka, who is in town for the Forsaken’s Wickerman Festival, and Sergeant Hartman of Southshore are looking for your help in keeping the enemy out of their festivities — are you up to the task? — Notes about the Patch: Patch 1.8

This was the beginning of the tradition of going from town to town collecting sweets from pumpkins. It’s another opportunity for many to attempt for the coveted Headless Horseman’s Mount. You may start farming again a week from tomorrow, on October 18th, if you don’t have it now. For all the information on this most popular of holidays, see our Guide to the End of the Year.

Hallow’s End Guide

Druids are getting a makeover.

In this patch, Druids got a number of major changes, the most noteworthy of which was Moonkin Form. Moonkin Form has seen significant modifications throughout time, including new race appearances and the Glyph of Stars, which transforms Moonkin Form into an Astral appearance. But here is where it all began.

Buyback Tab (General)

Up to 12 goods that you sold to a seller may now be repurchased. All merchants now have a buyback option where you may choose to repurchase the past 12 goods you sold since you last signed in. This list of things will be erased when your character quits the game or zones to a new region, so if you inadvertently sold anything, don’t wait to purchase it back. Buy it back right now. — Notes about the Patch: Patch 1.8

It may sound little these days, but picture a World of Warcraft where selling anything, even by accident, meant it was lost forever. How many of us have had this little addition preserve our sanity? How many of us have utilized it to make more room in our bags? It’s worth noting that it cleared when you checked out or switched zones when it was initially introduced. Thank Patch 1.8 the next time you utilize your handy Buyback Tab.
