In Patch 2.4, Blizzard introduced item upgrades in the Horadric Cube that allowed players to teach their items new skills and stats from other pieces of gear they found or crafted. Developers are now considering how best to implement a feature like this for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls.
The “diablo 2 convert set item” is a tool that allows players to upgrade their Set Items in Diablo II: Resurrected.
The Horadric Cube now has four new recipes for upgrading Set armor and weapons from Normal to Exceptional, and then from Exceptional to Elite, as part of Patch 2.4. The recipes claim that the iLevels and characteristics remain the same, but what precisely changes and by how much?
We put this to the test by upgrading the Vidala’s Rig set, which is a low-level set for bow-wielding Amazons. This is the set as it appears in game, updated to reflect the modifications made to it in Patch 2.4:
Required 14th grade Cold Resist 20% +15 To Life Vidala’s Snare Amulet
You’ll have a 50% better chance of getting magical items (2 Items)
64-67 for the defense Leather Armor of Vidala’s Ambush Level 14 is required. Strength required: 15 24 + 50 Defense + 11 Dexterity Durability
Fire Resistance: +24% (2 Items) Defense (2/lvl) +2-247 (3)
Fetlock Light Plated Boots by Vidala 9-11 on defense Level 14 is required. Strength required: 50 Durability: 36 Run/Walk 30 Percent Faster +150 Maximum Stamina
All Resistances + 8 (2 Items)
Long Battle Bow Vidala’s Barb 3-18 damage Level 14 is required. Strength required: 40 Additions to Dexterity: 50 1-20 damage from lightning
To Attack Rating (8/lvl): 8-792 (2 Items)
+75 to Attack Rating as part of a partial set bonus (2 Items) Mana is stolen at a rate of 7% every hit (2 Items) Dexterity +15 (3)
+50% Piercing Attack +75 To Attack Rating +1-148 Full Set Bonus Cold Damage Maximum (+1.5/Character Level) Mana is stolen at a rate of 7% every hit, which causes the game to freeze. +10 Strength +15 Dexterity +10 Strength +15 Dexterity +10 Strength +15 Dexterity
What are the consequences of upgrading them to Exceptional and Elite status? Defense is better with Exceptional and Elite armor, while Damage is higher in Exceptional and Elite weaponry. Both have greater prerequisites in terms of level and stats. The stats, partial set, and full set bonuses, on the other hand, do not alter across the three quality stages, severely limiting their value at higher levels. Only the sliding scale qualities, which alter with character level, will be useful beyond a certain point.
These recipes will not enhance rings or amulets since jewelry has only one quality state (no Normal, Exceptional, or Elite).

Vidala’s Rig will never be a suitable candidate for upgrading, but it is a nice example of a set that includes both armor and a weapon. Vidala’s Ambush’s damage has always been minimal, and it’s much lower in the Exceptional and Elite editions. Other Unique or higher-tier Set goods in the 62-72 range will never be similar to the other things.
So, what is the purpose of this upgrading system?
Bringing sets with large level ranges into parity. For example, the popular Immortal King set has a huge level range of pieces, from minimum level of 29 to maximum level of 76. Being able to upgrade those lower-level items to bring their Defense into line with the other items may make this set more attractive.
Upgrading popular single set items. It may be of interest to players who are using BiS one-off set items such as Guillaume’s Face face or Aldur’s Advance boots. Upgrading Guillaume’s Face from Exceptional Winged Helm to Elite Spired Helm increases its defense from 217 to 321 (Strength requirement also goes from 115 to 192 and Level requirement from 34 to 66). Aldur’s Advance Boots go from Exceptional Battle Boots to Elite Mirrored Boots, increasing the defense 39-47 to the early 60s (the ones I upgraded rolled with a 61), Strength requirement from 95 to 163, and Level requirement from 45 to 67. While the traits don’t change, the added Defense may extend their utility.
Other coveted set pieces, like Naj’s Puzzler staff and Laying of Hands gloves, are already Elite and do not need upgrading.
Filling out Magic Find sets, particularly in mid-levels. Magic Find items are also a great place to consider upgrades. Some lower level set items also have Magic Find. Some of these include:
- Heavy Boots – Cow King’s Hooves (Normal) – 25% Increased Chance of Getting Magic Items
- Immortal King’s Will – Avenger Guard (Normal) – Increases your chances of obtaining magical items by 25-40%.
- Milabrega’s Orb – Kite Shield (Normal) – Increases your chances of obtaining magical items by 20%.
- Sander’s Paragon – Cap (Normal) – Increases your chances of obtaining magical items by 35%.
