WoW’s Reset Day & FFXIV Stormblood Started

On September 4th, 2018, World of Warcraft marked a very special day for the MMORPG. The date marked the 10 year anniversary of its launch back in 2004. In celebration of this milestone, Blizzard announced that it would be resetting all character data on the servers and letting players relive their adventures again from scratch with a brand new experience.

On April 26th, 2018, the WoW’s Reset Day & FFXIV Stormblood Started was a special event that occurred in-game. This event brought back old content and introduced new features to the game.

Offerings and Anima: I can’t stop saying it, but if you want to get anything done in WoW, all you have to do is start farming, and the rewards will come quickly.

By the conclusion of week two of Grateful Offerings farming, I had a total of 16 or 17 slots filled in my Renown set spreadsheet, with 1-2 pieces each armor and Covenant type. This is a good pace, I believe, as long as I don’t overextend myself. Before a toon travels to Korthia, I’ve weaved in a Grateful Offerings round, followed by another run when they return from Korthia, with another 2-3 offering rounds before reset. I usually earn about 3-4k anima each alt every week, which is enough to buy a set item, so that would enough. Other than a global boss, I’m not farming any other sources – I could perform world quests, assaults, and souls missions, but that’s too much – at least not with my whole squad on the job.

It’s a kind of monetary see-saw that irritates me a little these days. Some toons have a lot of offers but little anima, while others have a lot of anima but no way to spend it due to a shortage of offerings. Well, I suppose it all works out in the end – there’s still a lot more than the sets themselves, such as weapons and mounts. I’m like the pace thus far; we’ll see what adjustments are needed in a month.

The On the Offensive meta-achievement, which is needed to get the final Covenant mount color from Death’s Advance, was just nerfed, which is a good improvement. First, it is now account-wide (that implies 1 alt, not 4), and second, it now needs 6 out of 9 accomplishments to complete. I’ve already completed three and want to do three more. The best part is that you don’t have to finish the whole assault – or, in some instances, even a quest: just show up to an assault field, check whether the quest in question is active, fulfill the criteria, and leave pleased.

My first million gold: I know, it may seem absurd to some of you, but I’ve always been broke in World of Warcraft. Because of costly mounts, mats to hit level cap in professions (yep, in my case professions is where I spend money, not earn it), and transmog purchases/transmog sessions, I’m not excellent with savings, sitting on 30-40k per toon at best and draining them all from time to time.

9.1 is an example of this. I was able to board the train and do some fantastic Korthite crystal business. It resonated with me as soon as I realized they are needed for legendaries and can be sold. I had no desire to go to Torghast and improve my own legendaries, so I started a company! I caught them when they were selling for 2300 a piece, and I’m still selling for 30k weekly now that the price is at 200 gold. It’s what my alts acquire via their regular Korthia activities with no additional work, pile up on my main, and sell right away – I login the following day to receive the money, but never the returned undesired crystals.

To cut a long tale short, I’ve amassed about a million dollars throughout my roster and am currently sitting on a gold stash, waiting for the right moment to use it. The only purchase I permitted was a paladin’s belt for 270k. Back in the days of raid set farming, I found an unpleasant surprise: an Ulduar paladin set requires a belt that can currently only be obtained from ogres (!) in the open world (!!) in Warlords of Draenor (!!!).

Naturally, farming it was counterproductive, and you had to wait till someone else got it and realized its worth enough to place it in AH rather than vendor it. I had checked AH everyday throughout the pre-SL months with no success, and now that I had the gold scorching my palms, I went to check — and behold, it was there! So, it was a good deal I struck.

FFXIV

Finally, with my second toon, I finished the Heavensward content, and we’re currently deep into Stormblood, the next expansion.

Let me start by saying that the initial impressions are fantastic. It’s as though each new chapter of the narrative improves progressively, to the point when looking back causes the disparity to widen exponentially. When you’re in, it’s never too terrible, but it gets better with time. Looking back, the A Realm Reborn experience was not quite an unbearable slog, but things really started to shine there in patch content after the climax raid, Heavensward main story was even better – even if I complained about the lack of logic in dragon behavior, the story upgraded emotionally and in writing even more in Heavensward patches (it’s like different teams wrote HS main and patc), Heavensward main story was even better (even if I complained about the lack of logic in dragon behavior

From what I’ve seen so far – I’ve only just arrived at Kugane, Japan’s port — the first leg of Stormblood clearly outclasses Heavensward. I was so involved in the beginning of the rebel narrative – well, it’s one of those storylines where you have to work very hard not to give anything away. An wicked empire/aristocracy is manipulating the justice strings of our souls much too readily for us not to get involved right now. Let me remind you that Suramar lore was created by one of the finest WoW teams ever, and here is why.

Instead of telling a standard linear narrative – developing trust with rebels, assisting them in minor battles, winning post by post, culminating in a battle – FFXIV added an enormous twist. Just as you begin to feel at ease with the rebels and their well-hidden base as your new home town, the wicked empire arrives and razes it to the ground. What do you think of it for plot development? Things like these keep life fascinating since no one or nothing is secure, and you never know what’s around the corner. So you simply stop speculating and forming hypotheses and enjoy the ride, knowing that there will be plenty of surprises along the way.

Stormblood also devotes more time and effort to world creation than Heavensward and A Realm Reborn. Quests attempt and succeed in explaining not just the protagonists’ ideas and significant arcs, but also how the land lives in general, including daily life, problems, and the locals’ attitude.

It seems that the graphics have also improved. It’s still a little gloomy, but not nearly as much as before.

There are a few of funny things to go through as well. One is that you are hounded by ent – the walking tree – gangs as soon as you begin running in the first zone. They’re known as Leshy, a term derived from Russian/Slavic mythology. Leshy, or Leshiy, is a woodland guardian ghost who usually takes the appearance of an elderly bearded peasant man. Depending on how a hero interacts with the woods and its animals, as well as the story’s requirements, it may be both malevolent and beneficent. It has the power to guide a hero, present him with a useful item, or cause him to get lost in the woods and perish. It’s not the first time FFXIV has referenced Russian mythology – I remember being amused by the fact that the Coerthas dragon dungeons featured dungeon bosses called Chudo-Yudo, Koshchei, Gorinich, and other famous fairy-tale villains named Chudo-Yudo, Koshchei, Gorinich, and others. In mythology, Koshchei is a lich king, an armored elderly sorcerer with a two-handed sword who usually kidnaps a princess to his castle for a hero to rescue and commands legions of demons and undead. Gorinich, also known as Zmey Gorinich, is a three-headed fire-breathing dragon that terrorizes towns in search of riches and virgins, while Chudo-Yudo is a chthonic sea serpent. Finding these tiny allusions to your culture in the game is interesting 🙂

Second, there’s music. When a cinematic sequence featuring a Garlemald song played, I was taken aback. First and foremost, it’s a brilliant take on the empire concept – but the anthem should be uplifting, not villainous. Even wicked civilizations consider themselves to be nice people. Second, the theme’s use in the open world. Because the expansion’s primary emphasis is empire, an extract for a quest taken/quest finished jingle makes sense. What isn’t clear is why the Garlemald hymn is being adopted as a rebel camp’s theme song. That was very strange!

Finally, there’s the issue of gameplay. I’m sticking to my strategy of leveling two toons at the same time, and it seems to be working out well. My first toon has arrived in local Japan, but the second isn’t far behind, and she’s on her way to Limsa Lominsa. This is how I believe I’ll do it from now on: chapter – catch up.
